Snorkeling and Diving
Diving is the premier activity with fantastic opportunites all around the atoll. Just off the island there are a dozen sites to visit with the Blue Hole just a couple of miles away. See the Dive Sites page to get a partial listing of the sites and what they have to offer.
If you do not dive and you want to enjoy the marine life, there is snorkeling, which can be just as exhilarating as diving. Snorkel in shallow water with brilliantly colored coral or over the deep ocean waters beyond the reef and experience the finest aquatic paradise in this hemisphere. By day, there is a plentiful variety of marine life and going at night is also a good way to see a variety of nocturnal sea creatures that are entirely different than those seen during the day. Many dive operators arrange trips to the Belize Barrier Reef and the atoll. When you rent the cabins you will have them right at your own beach to visit with your own boat daily. Just make sure you bring a bathing suit, light cover clothing, towel, and sunscreen.
Fishing
Spin fishing, fly fishing, and trolling may be experienced throughout the year, and because of the abundance of game fish, it promises to be an excellent sport. We have both spin and offshore trolling equipment but you are welcome to bring your fly fishing equipment if you would like to try for permit or tarpon. If you're looking for real excitement, we can almost guarentee that you will land a fish or two while you are on your trip. We offer deep sea fishing and the country has several tournaments annually. Just outside the Lighthouse Reef Atoll is some of the best deep sea game fishing in the Hemisphere.
The inlets, estuaries and deltas to the rivers are known for their jacks, tarpon, and snook. The lagoons and grass flats are popular fishing grounds for bonefish and barracuda. The coral reefs support snappper, jacks, grouper, and barracuda. Deep sea fishing offers large game such as sailfish, bonito, pompano, and marlin. We have equipment that can be borrowed or bring your own. If you wish to have a professional guide, please tell us at time of booking.
Exploring and Beach Combing
With almost ten miles of beach and shoreline to explore, it is easy to wade out with water shoes and a mask to explore the shoreline ecosystem. There is so much marine and bird life to observe, you may just want to wander and explore all week. There are several field guides at the house so you can check what you were seeing with what is in the books. Bring your binoculars and camera as you are sure to see something you have never seen before.
Stargazing and Astronomy
Since we are so far from any light pollution, you can on a clear night see all the stars of the sky. It is really quite amazing to observe how many you can see once you are away from lights. You have to see it to believe it.
